Hands off Asheville!

From Mountain Xpress comes the following:

Irresistibly vegan, or just some lame-ass squares?
by Rebecca Bowe on 11/08/2007

SuperVegan, a Web site and blog devoted mostly to informing readers about vegan restaurants in New York City, spotlighted Asheville after it was voted most vegetarian-friendly small city by GoVeg.com.

Food critic and blogger Laura Leslie dined at downtown Asheville’s the Laughing Seed, Rosetta’s Kitchen and Early Girl Eatery before turning up her nose up and concluding that she’s glad to be a spoiled New York City vegan.

While she did have praise for the Laughing Seed (it “totally rocked,” she wrote), she was less-than-impressed with the peanut-butter tofu at Rosetta’s. “Damn those hippies and their tofu cubes; I didn’t know anyone out there still ate like this,” she laments. “Nothing makes up for those lame-ass tofu cubes.” Nor was she pleased that the Early Girl doesn’t crumble the soybean curd in their tofu breakfast scramble, and wondered “on what planet does this count as scrambled?”

Does the critique signify a blow to Asheville’s vegetarian-friendly reputation? Or shall we just shrug it off and wonder, “On what planet would we actually care what some spoiled NYC vegan writes in her lame-ass restaurant review?”

Veterans Day

MASTERS OF WAR

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

Norman Mailer 1923-2007

My first thought on hearing of the death of Norman Mailer, was that we might finally get a DVD release of the legendary Town Bloody Hall documentary. This event was initially advertised as a "debate about feminism" that turned into a free-for-all; Norman famously tells Jill Johnston to "act like a lady" as she deliberately gropes another woman (a sort of Yippie-lesbian public action) onstage. In every photo I have seen of the event, Germaine Greer always seems to be laughing her ass off (see link), and I always wondered: Did she and Norman have sex before or after the event? Was their affair the result of the event, or was the event the result of their affair? Inquiring minds want to know, and maybe we'll finally get some details, and a fun DVD, too.

And you know, that is the best summation of the life of Norman Mailer: There he was, in the middle of everything, always. The 60s belonged to Norman Mailer, author of countless books, essays and articles covering the rapid-fire changes of the decade. He was the scribe of the times, the man on the scene. (The only other writer who even comes close is Tom Wolfe, and it is amusing that they hated each other and took public jabs at each other, often.)

Everyone wanted to know what Norman thought of everything, even my mother. Nixon? Civil Rights? Vietnam? Men on the Moon? Feminism? What does Norman say? And he held forth, always, never at a loss for words. He gave more interviews than Pete Townshend. And he was always provocative, egotistical, verbose, insane, fascinating. Long before the word "edgy" entered the lexicon, Norman embodied it. He was an unapologetic misogynist, who stabbed one of his wives (Adele Morales) at a party, and yet, women lined up to get his autograph, and famous feminists wanted to debate him (and sleep with him). He fought in World War II (subject of his book The Naked and the Dead), ran for mayor of New York City, got arrested at antiwar demonstrations, won Pulitzers, testified to keep John Lennon in the country, conducted a nasty public feud with Gore Vidal, and even got an ex-convict-writer (Jack Henry Abbott) out of prison on parole, who then promptly killed someone. And so much more.

Bruce Bawer relates that when The Deer Park (1955), was published, Mailer sent a copy to Hemingway along with the following letter:

TO ERNEST HEMINGWAY
-- because finally after all these years
I am deeply curious to know
what you think of this.

-- but if you do not answer, or if you
answer with the kind of crap you
use to answer unprofessional writers,
sycophants, brown-nosers, etc., then
fuck you, and I will never attempt
to communicate with you again.

The package came back marked Address Unknown.

Mailer never attempted to communicate with Hemingway again.
He wrote like he was somewhere inside your head already, in the "New Journalism" style that Joan Didion and the aforementioned Tom Wolfe and Gore Vidal also helped make famous. In Armies of the Night, he explained in one sentence why the corn-fed kids from the heartland were in rebellion and marching on the Pentagon. Yes, it was the war in Vietnam, but it was more than that, too: "They hated the authority because the authority had lied," he memorably wrote. As a young girl, I remember reading the words and feeling chills. Yes, I thought, that's it.

In his truly amazing work, The Executioner's Song, he succeeded in bringing to life the reality of two young lovers on the fringes of society, Gary Gilmore and Nicole Baker, and takes you right into the heart of poverty, murder and death row. Surprisingly, the famous misogynist does not slight Nicole (a welfare mother married three times by age 19), and at one point delivered another great line about one of Nicole's exes interrogating her, "just enough to get her screaming."

Even as late as 1999, he was still expressing himself in his imitable fashion, and showing a talent for reading between the lines. From The Time of Our Time:
Hillary is wonderful. She not only defends, she attacks. She speaks of a right-wing conspiracy to destroy her husband. It satisfies our deep need in America to find a new conspiracy every year.

What powerful instincts are in Hillary. The first lady's features, when studied, are remarkable. On the brow and mouth of very few women is written so vast and huge a desire for power. Of course, she is loyal to her Bill, loyal certainly by her good side, but even more loyal out of darker and more powerful urges. For if she remains loyal to him she will yet become a legend in America, and that is necessary to satisfy what may be her true aim--to become the first woman elected president of the United States
.
And in 2003, he wrote about the Iraq War also, as he had written about that other war that seems so similar (and unending) so long ago:
The armed forces had become the paradigmatic equal of a great young athlete looking to test his true size. Could it be that there was a bozo out in the boondocks who was made to order, and his name was Iraq? Iraq had a tough rep, but not much was left to him inside. A dream opponent. A desert war is designed for an air force whose state-of-the-art is comparable in perfection to a top-flight fashion model on a runway. Yes, we would liberate the Iraqis.

So we went ahead against all obstacles—of which the UN was the first. Wantonly, shamelessly, proudly, exuberantly, at least one half of our prodigiously divided America could hardly wait for the new war. We understood that our television was going to be terrific. And it was. Sanitized but terrific—which is, after all, exactly what network and good cable television are supposed to be
.
Oh, my, yes--I cannot tell a lie: I will miss him.

The Murder of Meredith Kercher

Left: Meredith Kercher.

Something is way hinky about the tabloid event of the season, the murder of Meredith Kercher. Meredith's roommate, Amanda Knox (now in custody), supposedly demanded "violent sex"--a guaranteed hot murder story. Add to that the alleged involvement of Amanda's boyfriend and another male friend from the Congo (that is to say, black) and you have all the ingredients for a 2-part CSI episode. From Sky News:

Murdered Meredith 'Refused Violent Sex'

Tuesday November 06, 2007

British exchange student Meredith Kercher was murdered because she refused to take part in violent sex, Italian police have claimed.

Officers spoke out following the arrest of the victim's flatmate Amanda Knox, 20 - and two men - after she reportedly broke down under interrogation.

She is said to have revealed more information about the death.

The three in custody are all suspected of conspiracy to commit manslaughter and to commit sexual violence.

They were seized in raids in Perugia early this morning.

Miss Kercher's body was found last Friday in her bedroom at the house she shared with Knox and two others on the Viale Sant'Angelo, not far from the city centre.

The Leeds University student, 21, from Coulsdon, south London, was partially clothed and her throat had been cut.

Italian news agency Ansa named the other two suspects as Italian student Rafaelle Sollecito, 24 - who is believed to be Knox's boyfriend - and Lumumba Diya, 37, from the Congo.

Sollecito was thought to be finishing his degree in the city and Diya, who is also known by the name Patrick, had been in the country since 1988 and had a regular work permit. Meredith had been learning Italian.

Detectives earlier confirmed fears that Miss Kercher appeared to have been killed when a sexual encounter went horrifically wrong.

Perugia's police chief Arturo De Felice told reporters the student had died fighting off a sexual attack.

He refused to elaborate further on the circumstances of her death but stressed that she was "morally innocent" and was a "victim and nothing more".

Miss Kercher, who arrived in Italy at the end of August as part of a one-year Erasmus programme, is thought to have died after being stabbed with a pocket knife.

A post-mortem test revealed there was evidence of sexual activity before her death, although medical examiners did not confirm suggestions that she had been raped.
The Times Online UK, offers more salacious details:

Meredith Kercher, the British student murdered in Perugia, was worried by the "strange men" her American housemate Amanda Knox brought back to their cottage, according to police evidence.

The emerging picture of Ms Knox's lifestyle in Italy is at odds with her reputation in the United States as a clean cut student, though not with some of the darker fantasies of her blog, in which she called herself "Foxy Knoxy" and wrote a story in which she imagined a drugged girl being killed.

In evidence to the police, Sophie Purton, 20, a close friend of the dead girl, said that Ms Kercher had told her that Ms Knox "had brought men back to the house several times, I don't know how many". She said Ms Kercher told her Ms Knox met the men in bars or internet cafes, and they included at least one "very strange type".

Hours before her death Ms Kercher watched a film at Ms Purton's home before walking back to the whitewashed hillside cottage she shared with Ms Knox and two Italian women. Ms Purton, who is not a suspect, told police she thought her account of Ms Kercher's anxieties over the men Ms Knox allegedly brought back might be "important".

The Perugia police chief Arturo De Felice has said Ms Kercher died fighting off a sexual attack. Ms Knox has accused Patrick Diya Lumumba, a 37 year old bar owner and musician, of the murder, and has claimed she does not remember whether Raffaele Sollecito, her Italian boyfriend, was also at the house.

In earlier testimony she had denied being at the house herself, and Mr Sollecito claimed they had been together elsewhere. But she later changed her story, telling investigators she had heard screaming from Ms Kercher's bedroom while Mr Lumumba was in it but stopped up her ears.

Police continue to suspect that Ms Knox was not only present at the house but took part in the murder, perhaps holding the victim down while she was sexually attacked. "All eyes are on the Dark Lady of Seattle," said La Stampa.

Ms Purton's revelation is one of several transcripts of police interrogations leaked to the Italian press. It was published by La Stampa and Corriere della Sera.

Ms Knox, Mr Sollecito, a computer science student, and Mr Lumumba, a Congolese immigrant, all appeared at a hearing today to confirm their continued detention on suspicion of involvement in murder and sexual violence. They were arrested on Tuesday.

Ms Kercher, 21, was found dead and semi naked in her bedroom last Friday. She was in Perugia studying Italian as part of her European Studies degree at Leeds University and arrived in August. Police have said she was "morally upright", suggesting she did not take part in the hidden drink and drugs culture of Perugia.

In an extraordinary twist Patrick Diya Lumumba not only denied today that he had murdered Meredith Kercher but claimed he had not even been in her house.

After lengthy questioning of the three suspects by Claudia Matteini, the investigating judge, Mr Lumumba's lawyers Carlo Pacelli and Giuseppe Sereni said their client had "an alibi".

"He was never in the house of horrors, and he can prove it," Mr Pacelli told reporters. "Our client has slept well because he believes in justice."

He added: "We have witnesses and documents which prove that our client was not there."

Mr Lumumba admitted to the judge that he knew Ms Kercher and had met her a month before her death. "I met her a couple of times," he said.

This however contradicts his claim at the time of his arrest that he did not know her at all.

Odds and Sods...from an official non-loser!

I am 20% loser. What about you? Click here to find out! Yes, that's right! I'm no loser! I have proof!

I would counsel that the test is somewhat culturally biased, with obvious extra points going to tattoos and piercings.

I am introducing a new feature here at Dead Air HQ, titled ODDS AND SODS. If I had that Twitter thing happening, I might try that, but I'm afraid it will be too complicated for my tiny brain. I mean, I could barely figure out Foxytunes!

~*~

For those of you who emailed me, concerning my soap opera with the preacher: let me assure you all, he did not see me enter the Gay Movie. They cordoned off the fundie protesters across the street, and unless they had binoculars (and I wouldn't totally discount the possibility!), they couldn't see who was going in. They did, however, preach very loudly and hyperventilated on cue for onlookers and video cameras.

The movie, titled FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO, was pretty basic, reminding everyone that gay people are often devout Christians too. I'd actually go one better, cribbing from my Imaginary Boyfriend, Rev. Michael Eric Dyson, who says the churches would fall apart without gay people: "Who's gonna run the choir and the Sunday School?" Indeed, WHO? All those deacons, all those priests, all those choir directors, all those nuns? ARE YOU SERIOUS? Well, I suppose this is news to some people, but certainly not me.

The main thing was the emotional reactions of the audience, the tears, the laughs of recognition.

It's an important movie that should be shown throughout the Bible belt. And everywhere else, too.

~*~

New to my blogroll:

AntiBarbie.Net writes short stories about cool stuff like women killing their ex-husbands (any ex-husbands reading this: you should NOT take this personally :P). At first, I thought ANTI-BARBIE meant "against Barbie dolls"--and then I realized she meant it like ANTI-CHRIST... she is The Anti-Barbie. Some atheists are so witty, you just gotta love it!

Charlottesville Prejudice Watch is a really great blog, deconstructing prejudice in all its sneaky little forms. Good politics and great reading!

And... speaking of deconstruction, we have the new Questioning Transphobia, a pointed reply to the really unpleasant website (which doesn't rate a link) "Questioning Transgender." I've never liked the snooty tone (we're girls and you aren't! nyah nyah!) of the aforementioned site, as well as the manner in which they totally ignore the reality of transmen (which of course, doesn't quite fit into their "colonization of women's space" theories).

Unfortunately, there have been few FEMINIST replies to these arguments, and the redoubtable Lisa at Questioning Transphobia jumps in with aplomb, making mincemeat of the usual Janice Raymondesque nonsense, which a lot of us grew up hearing and believing.

As penance for my one-time UNquestioning belief of several of these ideas, I am hereby linking Lisa and pledge to participate to the best of my ability and SIN NO MORE!

And... speaking of sinning no more, check out Roman Catholic Womenpriests!

I once had a root canal done* by a "substitute" dentist--a woman--since my usual dentist was on extended holiday. In so doing, I realized I'd never been to a female dentist before. And my oh my, wasn't she just so much gentler than my regular dentist... particularly as she began filing down the root of my tooth, the truly harrowing part of a root canal--even with copious amounts of nitrous oxide, which I demand forthwith, even before my novacaine shot. (I am paying for this, now, dammit, gimme my gas!) I remember thinking a woman dentist might make it better, and why can't we have more of them?

Same with priests! Wouldn't confession be so much nicer if you could say "Forgive me MOTHER, for I have sinned"? Would it be a bit MILDER, like that filing-down I just mentioned? Well, it would for me.

Did I just compare confession to root canal? Oh, hell yes.

*I've had 13 root canals in all.
