The Palin Papers

No, doesn't have the same ring as "The Pentagon Papers"--but far more dishy!

NEWSWEEK has also learned that Palin's shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain's top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family—clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent "tens of thousands" more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.
You may also have heard that Palin didn't know Africa was a continent. This was initially reported by Carl Cameron of FOX NEWS, so not exactly a liberal smear.

From Huffington Post:
[One] of the most astounding and previously unknown tidbits about Sarah Palin has to do with her already dubious grasp of geography. According to Fox News Chief Political Correspondent Carl Cameron, there was great concern within the McCain campaign that Palin lacked "a degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate, a vice president, a heartbeat away from the presidency," in part because she didn't know which countries were in NAFTA, and she "didn't understand that Africa was a continent, rather than a series, a country just in itself."

Palin was apparently a nightmare for her campaign staff to deal with. She refused preparation help for her interview with Katie Couric and then blamed her staff, specifically Nicole Wallace, when the interview was panned as a disaster. After the Couric interview, Fox News reported, Palin turned nasty with her staff and began to accuse them of mishandling her. Palin would view press clippings of herself in the morning and throw "tantrums" over the negative coverage. There were times when she would be so nasty and angry that her staff was reduced to tears.
When I wrote my nasty piece on Palin, this was definitely the vibe I was getting... In my working lifetime, I have been screamed at by several stupid conservative female supervisors, who put me in mind of Palin. My intuition told me she was one of these. I assume she is now being outed as an idiot by various pissed-off underlings who graciously covered for her ignorance and profligacy, only to be screamed at, instead of thanked. (Ah, if only we ALL could get even with nasty bosses!)

The entire Fox News report:

And she was ALMOST only a heartbeat away!

Did you see the Daily Show late last night? Catch it today, if not - Jon was being fantastically cutting about the fact that the press have known all these disastrous truths for months and are only opening up about them now that she's lost the election. I mean, didn't they think we'd've liked to KNOW before the vote?

I don't believe she knew anything about NAFTA...I'm not even sure she knew that Canada was also a neighbour of Alaska...but I'm being unkind.

What a lot of money to spend, though!Perhaps the clothing will be auctioned off...but how yucky to take clothing back from the kids.

i knew she was a fool when i first heard her talk. the katie couric thing should have convinced the country. how did they even get 1 vote?

Wow Daisy, great minds think alike w/ our blog posts, although yours is much longer than mine!! :)

How does Sarah Palin not fall down when she walks?

Marion - You're right, I bet she didn't know Canada was next to Alaska. I mean, she said that she had foreign experience b/c you could see Russia from Alaska. She failed to mention that Canada is actually NEXT to Alaska. She probably thinks Canada is one of our states. lol

I still find it hard to believe she wasn't aware she's situated in North America. I mean, she lives here, she graduated high school and supposedly journalism with flying colors, so; how the hell does she not know what she lives?

"According to Fox News Chief Political Correspondent Carl Cameron, there was great concern within the McCain campaign that Palin lacked "a degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate, a vice president, a heartbeat away from the presidency,"

...frankly, I'd be concerned that the average middle schooler knows more than she does on the state of affairs of .....well, everything I've seen her attempt to speak on, to be bluntly honest.

Ah dammit. "so; how the hell does she not know what she lives?"

Where, not what. damn brains' been substituting words lately.

Remember Bush's Europe faux pas and now the Africa one with Palin LOL. At least Obama knows all about Africa, a great comfort seeing I live here :)

I feel Palin cost McCain many votes on many issues.... mine would be her poor environmental record and the fact she hunts. Many, like me, don't like guns whether they are to shoot robbers in the city or wolves in the wild.

good post, Palin's obvious ignorance was scary, imagine her finger on THE button?

she'd end up nuking the Cayman Isles :(

She is America's hottest headed governor. Jennifer Granholm of Michigan has far more intelligence, AND has more inner and external beauty.

Then again, I bet Alaskans never look south enough to really know how their governor compares.

Yes, she's ignorant, vindictive and greedy. But shame on McCain for choosing her as his running mate. Too cynical for words.

Noting also that she didn't know the name of the Prime Minister of Canada (as we saw when that Quebec comedy duo pranked her). How can one be the governor of *Alaska* and not know this??? I guess she was just too busy dealing with Putin rearing his head in Alaskan airspace than to, um, notice the name of the leader of her *actual* neighbor.

The PUMA people are calling this treatment of Palin sexist, but I really just... Frankly, I would loathe a male theocrat who was waging war on my existence just as much as I loathe her. Since when is *criticizing any woman at all* considered to be sexist?

And, yeah, Thene, these absolutely would have been crucial things to know before the vote. It isn't as if we didn't already know she was stupid, but not knowing that Africa is a continent or which countries make up NAFTA (or even North America) seems like a whole new level of wtf-ery. I mean, how *can* anyone really be that ignorant? Candidates for major office should not be the sorts of people who lose on the show, "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?"

OMG, I SO could have used your site as a place of comfort during the campaign! LOL.
Love it, love it love it!
