Dead Air Church - post-Groundhog Day edition

Lent officially begins this week, so trying not to slack.

For Church this week, I present U2's Gloria. Even though I know it is supremely uncool to cop to liking U2 (in any incarnation) these days, this is one of my favorite hymns.

1) Bono's hair! Not quite a mullet, but definitely in 80s hair-band mode. This is relatively early; he was still fresh-faced and not so full of himself. (But you can see where he's ready to veer off in that direction!)

2) Listen to that killer riff by The Edge. Lots of people have stolen it since.

3) It's a beautiful video, as befits the subject.

4) The lyrics are so simple and just so perfect:

I try to sing this song
I, I try to stand up
But I can't find my feet.
I, I try to speak up
But only in you I'm complete.

In te domine
Oh, Lord, loosen my lips.

I try to sing this song
I, I try to get in
But I can't find the door
The door is open
You're standing there, you let me in.

In te domine
Oh, Lord, if I had anything, anything at all
I'd give it to you.

In te domine

U2 - Gloria

Have a wonderful sabbath, everyone.

I met Bono once. About ten years ago in LA. He was really down to earth.

Saw U2 in 1981 in Boston on a double bill with the Jam-right before they hit it big and have loved them ever since.

Cool or not.

Great song-bad haircuts!

I must not be very cool then, because I have great love for U2. I like that Bono actually seems to admit that he's a self-important bastard *grin*

Wow. Thank you so much, for taking me back in time 26 years, when i used to stay up trying to catch this video on MTV! I played the shit out of this album. Still have it, too.

My daughter (age 8) sorta liked it, but she's really more of an R&B girl (so am I, but there's always been something about Bono's voice that grabs me).

Anyway....thanks for the dose of nostalgia! I'm on dial-up---I never watch YouTube because of it---but this was worth the long download time. Last time I did this, it was last year when Romeo Void's "Never Say Never" ws posted on Feministe.

HotDog, La Lubu and Seraph, welcome!

LL, one of my purposes in starting this blog was to unearth buried memories, otherwise known as nostalgia. I think connecting with our "sensory pasts" strengthens us psychologically and spiritually. I love hearing that I brought back a memory for you!!! That's exactly my intention!

I also heard from someone about an Alice Cooper video I posted, who thanked me for bringing back his elementary school years. I LOVE THAT!!! :)

Seraph, I trade CDs with people on a regular basis, and quickly learned that U2 is considered elevator music to some younger folks! Nonetheless, my list of beloved U2 songs is pretty long... I'll post Electrical Storm one of these days, as well as others.

Thanks for commenting!
