Gay-bashing neanderthals on the loose in Long Island

I'm no gourmet cook, so I can't explain the fact that I am a huge TOP CHEF fan. I was therefore very upset to hear of the following:

Former 'Top Chef' contestant Josie Smith-Malave beaten by anti-gay attackers on Long Island

SEA CLIFF, N.Y. — A former contestant on Bravo's Top Chef was beaten by attackers yelling anti-gay slurs, her lawyer said.

Josie Smith-Malave, who was featured on the second season of the reality show, was among a small group of women who were asked to leave a Sea Cliff bar over Labor Day weekend, lawyer Yetta Kurland said Tuesday.

About 10 young people followed the women and began screaming anti-gay epithets, spitting on them and then beating them, Kurland said.

Smith-Malave, who is in her early 30s, is openly gay, Kurland said.

Nassau County police said they were investigating, but declined to provide details of the incident.

Smith-Malave, a Miami native, is a former sous-chef for Marlow and Sons restaurant in Brooklyn. She has played for the New York Sharks of the Independent Women's Football League.

It truly makes ya sick. How much more proof will this administration need before finally agreeing to sign hate crimes legislation, rather than threatening to veto it. I'm tired of our fellow citizens being beaten or killed over one aspect of their life that is none of our business!

I think someone would have to attack a white, Christian Republican specifically for those reasons before they'd sign the Hate Crimes Bill. Because then it would affect them, you know, the important folk. Gah.

gods, between this, the Williams case, and, well, the three vandalized Synagogues up here around my neck of the woods (right in time for big time jewish high holy day, even), I just have to ask...

"What the fuck is wrong with people?" and then assume my basic take on humans is correct: They Suck.

Long Island is not Manhattan; there's plenty of mouth-breathing reactionary-ism to be found, especially outside the city limits.

by the way, the House did pass the legislation, the Senate is expected to; it's fucking Bush and his theocratic enablers who're threatening (and no doubt will follow through with) the veto. another president and we'd have had it by now, i don't doubt. one more reason to hate the sumbitch. i'm posting about it right now, actually

Belle, I hate when every nasty thing out of the south is highlighted in the media that way, headlines reading, in one form or another: SOUTHERNERS ONCE AGAIN DO SOMETHING HORRIFIC.

I just wanted to remind everyone that bad people exist everywhere, even in (hushed, idolizing whisper) progressive, culturally aware, media-perfect, enlightened NEW YORK.

So that's why I headlined it that way. ;)

ohyeah, i was responding to bryce viz "if new York ain't safe..." [i assumed he meant for gay folk]. just saying: out in the boonies it ain't that safe. hell, not in the five boros for that matter either really; but, it's not necessarily any more urbane or enlightened just cuz it's sharing the same landmass as part of the City. in fact quite the opposite sometimes...
