Problem is no one wants to go by train anymore, and the cost to upgrade the rail system would be staggering. This was the only way I traveled when I was a kid b/c my mom refused to fly. My parents took Amtrak to/from the west coast any time they wanted to visit. It's a great way to travel, but only if you have unlimited time to get where you are going. Somehow I don't see high speed trains in America's future.

I would much rather take a train than fly. I did take a train to NYC from Ohio once, loved it.

If you notice, those countries have high population density or are communist. The US is too spread out and has too much individual choice for a comprehensive train system without massive subsidies--in other words, making non-riders pay for the trains.

I like trains, especially for medium distance commutes--I loved the Chicago commuter trains. My experience on longer distance is limited to Amtrak in the 70's/80's, so isn't very good. Back then I'd ride the Broadway Limited to Chicago about once a year--it was hours late every time I took it. When I asked the ticket clerk if it was ever on time, she said "I don't know, I've only worked here 6 months".
